Mate is a South American drink similar to tea. Amanda has a brand of mate named after her!
Rather than using a tea bag or tea kettle, the locals drink mate by pooring loose leaves into a gourd, pouring hot water over them, and then drinking the mixture through a filtered straw.
Tim wasn't adventurous enough to get his own gourd of mate. He was happy to try a sip to confirm he didn't like it.
